MR.AOK – Emerald Uplink

MR.AOK is a Boston native who moved to Brooklyn’s Bedford-Stuyvesant neighborhood four years ago. Since then, the hip hop and dance music aficionado has stayed busy hosting a show on WNYU, collaborating with DIY label Famous Class, and spinning records on the Champale podcast. Earlier this year, he visited EVR’s Gold River Show1 and headlined Jerry Jones’ monthly party in Bushwick.

Last month, MR.AOK escaped New York’s lingering winter for the warmer shores of Asia. Later this week, he is supporting Total Freedom2 in Bangkok. In celebration of his journey, he’s blessed us with this exclusive mix — composed on a tropical rock somewhere in the middle of the Gulf of Thailand. You can check out more on his Soundcloud3 page.

Q&A W/ MR.AOK

What type of beat inspires you the most?
just loving simplicity currently. like the perfect phrase that turns a generic rap song into the summer jam that you can listen to 50X a day and still need more. or a synth that’s so clean and spacious all you need is a 808 and snare behind it and you’re hooked.

What’s a typical Friday night for MR.AOK?
probably involves some sort of asian soup and then…

Who are some of your favorite DJs/artists in the Brooklyn scene?
dreskull, rizzla, obey city, lauren flax, dj select, brenmar, jerry jones, knifeshow, mohegan son to name a few.

What do you see as the future of club music?
club music really feels like the nexus for a ton of different stuff thats happening musically right now. i could go on forever but i’m no music critic so basically: blurrier genres, more rap and as much fog as possible.

What’s your favorite late night snack?
i’m in thailand right now and they have this traditional meal called khao man gai that’s basically boiled/fried chicken over rice with spicy sauce. it comes with a clear broth soup with wintermelon that the chicken was cooked in and the whole deal costs around $1. it sounds really simple but it’s unreal.

What’s the hottest track people (probably) haven’t heard yet?
“ambient noise of the international space station” by col. chris hadfield. also “triple fat goose” by matt shadetek.

What’s next?
play this show in bangkok, get back to ny, say wsup to my 2 black cats and get back into it. have another mix on the way for summer that i’m very excited about and i’ve finally started to work on some original material again.
